Athletes often ask me for tips on how to promote efficient muscle growth or lose weight faster. Of course, your diet plays a decisive role in your fitness success, but there are also a few methods that support efficient fitness training.
In this post, I want to introduce you to electrical muscle stimulation training (EMS training), which I offer you as your personal trainer in Zurich. Some competitive athletes also use EMS training to vary their sessions and give their muscles new stimuli.
What is EMS training and what does it do?
With EMS training, your muscles are stimulated through electrodes. Electrical impulses boost the activity of the muscle groups they're directed to. This triggers a contraction that promotes muscle growth.
In our joint personal training in Zurich, we combine electrical muscle stimulation with strength training or free weight training. This multiplies the intensity of your training, and with regular sessions you can notice changes within a short time. The electrical impulses are in no way dangerous or harmful to your internal organs! The impulses feel like a light tingling and don't hurt at all.
Through medical EMS training you can:
- Keep your body in shape
- Strengthen your abs or other muscle groups
- Prevent injuries
- Relieve physical complaints such as back or neck pain
- Recover muscles faster after intense strain and heal injuries faster.
Exercise with electrical stimulation isn't suitable for you if:
- You have a pacemaker, or
- you're pregnant.

How does EMS training work?
Electrical muscle stimulation originally comes from the medical field. With this method, gentle electrical impulses are directed into the muscles. EMS was developed to reach the deep muscle layers. This way, back pain and muscle injuries can be relieved faster.
With medical EMS training, you wear special clothing that fits tightly against your skin and is connected to electrodes. Through bioelectric impulses, your muscles don't just work under their own power, but receive an additional stimulus, causing them to work harder.
It's important that EMS training is always supervised by a trained trainer and that only high-quality electrodes are used.
EMS Zurich in 1:1 personal training
In our personal 1:1 coaching, whether at the gym, at home or in your office in Zurich, I adjust the intensity of the electrical impulse for each part of your body. While your muscles are being stimulated, I guide you through various strength exercises.
For our joint EMS personal training, I use the stimulators from the Swiss brand Compex®, whose effectiveness has been proven in clinical studies. Compex stimulators fall under the Class II medical device category and meet the standards of European Norm 93/42 EEC for medical devices.

Quality over quantity: more intense workouts through electrical impulses
If you want lasting fitness success, quality of training comes before quantity. Short, intense workouts are often better than long ones. By combining medical EMS with strength training, you increase the intensity of your training. That's because this method specifically stimulates your muscles through electrical impulses.
It's not just your muscles that are engaged more intensely, the electrical impulses also activate muscles that lie particularly deep and aren't normally easy to reach. On top of that, you burn more calories with EMS training than with a regular training session, due to the higher basal metabolic rate driven by muscle growth. This way, EMS sport can also help you lose weight sustainably.
EMS training fits into any schedule
Thanks to more effective stimulus setting, EMS training is genuinely highly efficient, so as a rule, two EMS-combined strength sessions per week are enough. This means you can reach your fitness goals even with a stressful schedule. Depending on your training level and how much time you have available, I recommend a training duration between 30 and 60 minutes.
Since recovery time is longer with EMS-combined strength training than with regular muscle training, you should train with several days between sessions. If you're still new to EMS, I recommend not starting too intensely and building up slowly. In personal training Zurich, I of course create an EMS training plan individually tailored to your needs, as well as a nutrition plan.
