Why you should train with a coach rather than alone, especially after the pandemic

After a year of pandemic, fitness and health can suffer quite a bit. No wonder, when the commute to the office shrinks to just a few metres and every habit gets turned upside down. But now that summer is here, gyms have reopened and Corona measures have been eased significantly, are you motivated to move more again and want to dive full throttle into training?

Especially after a longer period of rest, you should definitely not do that, because joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons first need to get used to movement again. Ease into it slowly at first and don't overload your body, to avoid injuries.

To approach things the right way after a longer break from exercise, you shouldn't train alone, but with a coach. In this post you'll learn why this isn't an unnecessary expense, but a valuable investment in yourself.

Don't overestimate yourself after a long break from exercise

After several months of inactivity, you should make sure the athletic load you put on your body matches your current capacity. It's important to listen to your body and not overestimate yourself, to avoid the risk of an injury that could sideline you for several weeks.

But don't worry, even starting at a low level, you can achieve noticeable effects! In a professional setting with a trainer who builds a balanced yet effective training program for you, you're on the safe side and approaching things the right way.

Not sure whether you should spend money on coaching, and whether the higher cost of 1:1 training is justified compared to training on your own at the gym? Of course you can get back in shape on your own too. But that's the harder, and often longer, path. Investing properly always pays off.

In personal training, a trainer can address your very individual needs specifically. Every person has different physical conditions, differs in weight and age, and training status varies from body to body. There might also be health conditions or other limitations that need to be taken into account.

How do you motivate yourself to get back in shape?

Besides the physical aspect, there's of course also a mental one when getting back into exercise. What's the best way to motivate yourself to start again and actually stick with it? It all starts with the right inner attitude. Your mindset determines whether you approach the change and follow through.

With my personal coaching, I take a holistic approach: I don't just help you get back in shape with the right fitness training and a healthy diet tailored to your individual needs, I also support you with mental coaching to find mental strength, step outside your comfort zone and reach your goals. And I don't just mean athletic goals. With the right mindset, you can achieve anything.

An investment in your own accountability

That's why training with a coach is an investment in yourself. In you, in the development and transformation it takes for change to happen. When you invest in yourself, you're simultaneously investing in your own accountability. There are no more excuses.

With coaching, you follow through on firm intentions reliably. On your own, it's easier to drift off track and "forget" a workout here and there. And a few weeks later, you're surprised to realise you've completely forgotten your goal. In coaching, we keep an eye on your progress.

Of course, it's completely normal and fine to go off track sometimes after setting new goals. But with a coach, you have someone by your side who helps you out of a motivational slump and shows you new perspectives and possibilities.

I also regularly invest in myself and learn new things at seminars and workshops with other coaches, to realise my own personal wishes and goals :-)

Want to exercise after a Corona vaccination / infection?

If you've received a Corona vaccination, you should take a day off. If you have no symptoms like headaches, exhaustion or fever, there's of course nothing against moderate physical activity. However, go easy on your vaccinated arm and don't train with heavy weights. You should avoid high-intensity training sessions in the days right after a vaccination, since very intense training can weaken your immune system and make vaccine reactions more likely.

After a Corona infection, you should only start exercising again once you're fully healthy. Anyone who had a severe course of a COVID-19 infection should have their health status and fitness for exercise checked by a doctor as a precaution.
