Your gut is far more than just an organ that absorbs nutrients and excretes waste. Your gut also plays a decisive role in your health, your wellbeing and your fitness!
In the first part of a 3-part blog series, you'll learn how to recognize an imbalanced gut flora and how a natural gut cleanse can improve your health and help you shed excess weight more easily.
Your gut has an enormous impact on your health
Until a few years ago, when I suddenly found myself dealing with serious stomach and gut issues and started looking into gut health intensively for the first time, I had no idea how complex the gut really is.
To this day, it still isn't fully understood. Over the past 20 years, numerous studies have found a close connection between gut health and the immune system, hormonal and metabolic disorders, skin conditions, autoimmune diseases and cancer.
Since the gut and the central nervous system are connected, your gut flora even influences your mental health and mood!

Your gut flora even affects your weight
Researchers have found that the gut flora of overweight people - unlike that of lean people - is predominantly populated by bacteria that extract nutrients from food very thoroughly (Bacteroides).
This means that these types of bacteria cause more calories to be absorbed from food, and fat deposits build up more easily. But if the gut is colonized with a wide variety of bacteria, the risk of being overweight is lower. So if you want to lose weight sustainably and stay lean, you should pay attention to a healthy gut.
In personal training, I'm happy to show you how a natural gut cleanse, exercise and a healthy diet can cleanse your gut naturally and get rid of the fat-promoting gut bacteria.

Gut flora - the center of your health
But what actually is gut flora? Gut flora refers to all the gut bacteria that live mostly in the large intestine and, in smaller amounts, in the rectum. More than 100 trillion bacteria live in our gut - which is by no means a bad thing!
Gut bacteria play an important role for your metabolism and your health. They also perform a wide range of tasks: among other things, the bacteria are responsible for breaking down fiber, which releases anti-inflammatory fatty acids that serve as a vital energy source for your body.
In addition, various vitamins such as vitamin B2, K, biotin and folic acid are produced by the gut flora. And the bacteria in your gut are also extremely important for your immune defenses.

What happens when your gut flora falls out of balance?
Not all gut bacteria are good. The bad gut bacteria can cause
- digestive issues
- a bloated stomach and
- frequent diarrhea.
Besides issues directly affecting the gut, symptoms such as
- reduced performance
- fatigue
- trouble concentrating
- increased susceptibility to infections
- skin problems
- allergies and
- psychological issues can also occur, which you wouldn't immediately connect with your gut.
The composition of your gut flora differs from person to person. It depends, among other things, on your genes, the way you were born (natural birth or C-section), your diet and your age.
To stay healthy, it's crucial that the bad gut bacteria don't gain the upper hand. If there's an excess of bad bacteria, the illnesses listed above can be triggered.

How does an imbalanced gut flora develop?
If you suffer from frequent stomach aches, diarrhea, a bloated stomach, or have deficiencies, especially in vitamins, that can be a sign of an imbalanced gut flora.
An imbalanced gut flora can be triggered by, among other things:
- Taking medication (especially antibiotics)
- A one-sided, unbalanced diet
- Too little exercise
- Stress: stress can affect your body in various ways, including digestive issues, loss of appetite or food cravings
If you're suffering from severe symptoms, it naturally makes sense to have a doctor or naturopath send a stool sample to a lab. There it can be determined whether the bacteria found point to an unhealthy gut flora, or whether the cause of your symptoms is actually something else.
How you can cleanse your gut naturally
To bring an imbalanced gut flora back into balance and improve your gut health, a natural gut cleanse can help you.
A gut flora cleanse usually involves several measures that you can easily work into your everyday life, that help cleanse your gut, have a detoxifying effect, and help rebuild your gut flora.
- Move regularly
- Get enough sleep
- Drink plenty of still water or herbal tea (only drink coffee and black tea in moderation)
- Eat a balanced, healthy diet
- Reduce stress and treat yourself to relaxation as often as possible
- Take probiotics and prebiotics if needed (this rebuilds your gut flora with microbiological preparations)

Nutrition for a healthy gut flora
Make your diet varied and take in as much fiber as possible from fruit, vegetables, oats, whole grains and flaxseed. Work legumes and healthy fats into your meal plan, and avoid heavily processed foods and ready meals. Also chew thoroughly, to take strain off your gut.
With a predominantly plant-based diet, you can do your gut a lot of good and nourish the good gut bacteria. In the next part of our series on gut health, I want to go into this point in more detail and show you how a vegan diet affects gut health.
Eat prebiotic foods that nourish the good bacteria in your gut, such as bananas, artichokes, leeks and salsify. Also eat fermented foods like sauerkraut, miso, kimchi or kombucha. These also contain good bacteria for your gut.
