10 diet mistakes – and how to avoid them

You've finally decided to shed the excess kilos and start a diet – great! But suddenly you notice it's not going the way you pictured it. The scale shows no change, or you feel constantly tired and hungry. That can be frustrating, but don't worry, it happens to most of us. The reason could be that you're making a few typical diet mistakes that are sabotaging your success. In this article I'll explain the 10 most common diet mistakes and how to avoid them, so you can reach your goals.

Before we begin, let me briefly introduce myself: my name is Marco Laterza, I'm a personal trainer from Zurich. I support my clients in the areas of training, nutrition and mindset. A holistic approach to health and fitness matters a lot to me, and it's a concept I want to pass on to everyone. If you're interested in working together, feel free to get in touch anytime.

1. You're eating too few calories

A widespread misconception is that you should eat as little as possible to lose weight fast. Sure, you need to create a calorie deficit to lose fat, but if you go too extreme, you damage your body. Not only will you constantly feel tired and drained, your metabolism will also slow down, causing your body to hold onto fat.

Solution: find the right calorie deficit. As a rule of thumb: a deficit of about 300-500 calories a day is enough to lose weight healthily without wrecking your metabolism.

2. You rely on short-term diets

Many people get seduced by trends like "crash diets" or "juice cleanses." These diets promise fast results, but they're often not sustainable. As soon as you go back to eating "normally," the kilos come back fast, and often you end up gaining even more than before.

Solution: focus on long-term dietary changes instead of short-term diets. The key to sustainable weight loss is a balanced diet you can maintain permanently.

3. You avoid all carbohydrates

Low-carb diets have become incredibly popular in recent years. Of course, reducing processed carbohydrates like sugar can help, but carbohydrates are an important energy source for your body, especially if you train regularly.

Solution: choose the right carbohydrates. Go for complex carbohydrates like whole grain products, oats and vegetables. These give you the energy you need and keep you full for longer.

4. You're drinking your calories

An often overlooked diet mistake is consuming calorie-dense drinks. Soft drinks, juices, milky coffees and alcohol can quickly become a calorie trap without you noticing. These liquid calories don't fill you up, but they add massively to your calorie balance.

Solution: pay attention to how many calories you're drinking. Choose water, unsweetened tea or black coffee to avoid unnecessary calories.

5. You're not training enough

Many people believe they can lose weight through diet alone, and that's true to a certain extent. But exercise doesn't just help you burn more calories, it also strengthens your muscles and keeps your metabolism active.

Solution: build regular training into your everyday life. A combination of strength training and cardio is ideal for burning fat and preserving your muscle mass.

6. You're weighing yourself too often

Daily weigh-ins can be frustrating, especially when you're not seeing fast results. Weight fluctuations are completely normal and can be influenced by many factors, such as water balance or digestion.

Solution: don't weigh yourself daily! Go for a weekly check instead, and also pay attention to other signs of progress, like how you feel in your body, your measurements, or your training performance.

7. You're allowing yourself too many "cheat meals"

A "cheat meal" here and there is completely fine and can even help you stick with your diet. But when a "cheat meal" turns into a full "cheat day" or even a "cheat weekend," it can quickly undo your progress.

Solution: plan your cheat meals deliberately and stick to moderate portions. Enjoy them, but don't let them get out of hand.

8. You're eating too little protein

Protein is a key nutrient when it comes to losing weight. It keeps you full for longer, supports muscle growth and helps your body burn fat. But many diet plans don't include enough protein-rich foods.

Solution: make sure every meal contains enough protein. Good sources are chicken, fish, eggs, quark, tofu and legumes.

9. You have no patience

Losing weight is a marathon, not a sprint. It can be frustrating when the kilos don't come off as fast as you'd like. But it's important to stay patient and keep your eye on long-term success.

Solution: set realistic goals and celebrate small wins. Remember that sustainable weight loss takes time, but that's exactly what makes it last.

10. You're not sleeping enough

Lack of sleep can significantly hurt your diet success. When you don't get enough sleep, the hormone ghrelin rises, which stimulates your appetite. At the same time, the satiety hormone leptin drops, causing you to eat more and feel less full.

Solution: prioritise enough sleep. Try to sleep about 7-9 hours every night to best support your diet goals.

Conclusion

Losing weight can be challenging, but if you avoid these 10 common mistakes, the path to your target weight becomes much easier. Focus on a balanced diet, regular exercise, and listen to your body's signals. And remember: patience and consistency are the key to success!
